    N x N coupler uniformity in a CWDM passive star home network based on multimode fiber: A time-effective calculation method

    International audienceOptical fiber is the most appropriate medium able to meet future requirements in terms of capacity and heterogeneity in the home network. The advantages of a passive star architecture associated with wavelength multiplexing have already been reported. For lower-cost issues, multimode fiber would be preferred, but some problems were raised related to poor uniformity of the N £ N multimode coupler when using the usual coarse wavelength division multiplexing sources. An original time-effective method is proposed, based on both simulation and calculation. Many results are provided, giving a better understanding of the behavior of the N £ N coupler when different types of sources are used, also taking into account improvement techniques such as offset launching or mode scrambling

    Norepinephrine weaning in septic shock patients by closed loop control based on fuzzy logic

    International audienceABSTRACT: INTRODUCTION: The rate of weaning of vasopressors drugs is usually an empirical choice made by the treating in critically ill patients. We applied fuzzy logic principles to modify intravenous norepinephrine (noradrenaline) infusion rates during norepinephrine infusion in septic patients in order to reduce the duration of shock. METHODS: Septic patients were randomly assigned to norepinephrine infused either at the clinician's discretion (control group) or under closed-loop control based on fuzzy logic (fuzzy group). The infusion rate changed automatically after analysis of mean arterial pressure in the fuzzy group. The primary end-point was time to cessation of norepinephrine. The secondary end-points were 28-day survival, total amount of norepinephine infused and duration of mechanical ventilation. RESULTS: Nineteen patients were randomly assigned to fuzzy group and 20 to control group. Weaning of norepinephrine was achieved in 18 of the 20 control patients and in all 19 fuzzy group patients. Median (interquartile range) duration of shock was significantly shorter in the fuzzy group than in the control group (28.5 [20.5 to 42] hours versus 57.5 [43.7 to 117.5] hours; P < 0.0001). There was no significant difference in duration of mechanical ventilation or survival at 28 days between the two groups. The median (interquartile range) total amount of norepinephrine infused during shock was significantly lower in the fuzzy group than in the control group (0.6 [0.2 to 1.0] mug/kg versus 1.4 [0.6 to 2.7] mug/kg; P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Our study has shown a reduction in norepinephrine weaning duration in septic patients enrolled in the fuzzy group. We attribute this reduction to fuzzy control of norepinephrine infusion. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Trial registration: Clinicaltrials.gov NCT00763906

    Towards a multiservice & multiformat optical home area networks

    International audienceWe propose mid and long term visions of optical Home Area Networks. The challenge is not only to increase the network capacity, but also to take into account the heterogeneity of the signals to be conveyed: Ethernet, RF TV and radio signals for wireless-end-connectivity. Two solutions are described: a mid term solution, based on an active star and centered on a multiformat switch, and a long term solution based on a fully transparent infrastructure, associated with optical wavelength multiplexing. These solutions and the corresponding realized setups will be described and compared in terms of performances, flexibility and robustness to future evolutions

    Repurposing dihydropyridines for treatment of helicobacter pylori infection

    Antibiotic resistance is a major cause of the increasing failures in the current eradication therapies against Helicobacter pylori. In this scenario, repurposing drugs could be a valuable strategy to fast-track novel antimicrobial agents. In the present study, we analyzed the inhibitory capability of 1, 4-dihydropyridine (DHP) antihypertensive drugs on the essential function of the H. pylori response regulator HsrA and investigated both the in vitro antimicrobial activities and the in vivo efficacy of DHP treatments against H. pylori. Six different commercially available and highly prescribed DHP drugs—namely, Nifedipine, Nicardipine, Nisoldipine, Nimodipine, Nitrendipine, and Lercanidipine—noticeably inhibited the DNA binding activity of HsrA and exhibited potent bactericidal activities against both metronidazole-and clarithromycin-resistant strains of H. pylori, with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values in the range of 4 to 32 mg/L. The dynamics of the decline in the bacterial counts at 2 × MIC appeared to be correlated with the lipophilicity of the drugs, suggesting different translocation efficiencies of DHPs across the bacterial membrane. Oral treatments with 100 mg/kg/day of marketed formulations of Nimodipine or Nitrendipine in combination with omeprazole significantly reduced the H. pylori gastric colonization in mice. The results presented here support a novel therapeutic solution for treatment of antibiotic-resistant H. pylori infections

    Solution Structure of Human p8 MTCP1 , a Cysteine-rich Protein Encoded by the MTCP1 Oncogene, Reveals a New a a a-Helical Assembly Motif

    International audienceMature-T-Cell Proliferation) is the ®rst gene unequivocally identi®ed in the group of uncommon leukemias with a mature phenotype. The three-dimensional solution structure of the human p8 MTCP1 protein encoded by the MTCP1 oncogene was determined by homonuc-lear proton two-dimensional NMR methods at 600 MHz. After sequence speci®c assignments, a total of 931 distance restraints and 57 dihedral restraints were collected. The location of the three previously unassigned disul®de bridges was determined from preliminary DIANA structures, using a statistical analysis of intercystinyl distances. The solution structure of p8 MTCP1 is presented as a set of 30 DIANA structures, further re®ned by restrained molecular dynamics using a simulated annealing protocol with the AMBER force ®eld. The r.m.s.d. values with respect to the mean structure for the backbone and all heavy atoms for a family of 30 structures are 0.73(AE0.28) and 1.17(AE0.23) A Ê , when the structured core of the protein (residues 5 to 63) is considered. The solution structure of p8 MTCP1 reveals an original scaffold consisting of three a helices, associated with a new cysteine motif. Two of the helices are covalently paired by two disul®de bridges, forming an a-hairpin which resembles an antiparallel coiled-coil. The third helix is oriented roughly parallel to the plane de®ned by the a-antiparallel motif and its axis forms an angle of %60 with respect to the main axis of this motif
